« What appears to be drool is actually sweet honey. It is very sticky and clings stubbornly if touched. »

Its story

Appearance

Gloom is blue and bipedal. A flower of reddish-brown petals spotted white, ringed by four leaves, grows on its head: one large spot per petal on females, many small ones on males.

Lifestyle

It lives on grassy plains. Its sticky nectar and flower smell so foul a person can faint more than a mile away; it evolves from Oddish into Vileplume or Bellossom.

In the anime

Erika met hers as a child, when it saved her from a Grimer, and uses its stench in perfumes. Ash pulls it from the Celadon Gym after a fire started by Team Rocket.

Name origin

Atsuko Nishida designed it after the mandrake and the Rafflesia bud, a parasitic plant with foul-smelling flowers. The name Gloom may blend gloom, goo or glue, and bloom.

Did you know?

The smell grows worse in danger, but it will not release it when it feels safe.
It is the only dual-type Pokémon that can evolve into a single-type Pokémon.
Although it has the Chlorophyll Ability, the Rafflesia genus does not contain chlorophyll.
