Description

« This calm and gentle Pokémon swims gracefully through the sea. After building speed, it can leap out of the water. It is often misidentified as a bird Pokémon due to this behavior. »

Its story

Appearance

Mantine is a large ray, dark blue above and pinkish gray below, with a coarse hide. Its wing-like fins have a black ring and a jagged edge, and two long horns rise from its head.

Lifestyle

It lives in the open sea, where schools race, and leaps 300 feet high. It evolves from Mantyke and, being docile, lets a Remoraid cling under a fin.

In the anime

In the Eevee shorts, a Mantine rescues Sandy after a fall from a boat and helps it learn Mantine Surfing. Ash and his classmates later free several Mantine captured by Team Rocket.

Name origin

Its leaps recall the manta ray, called a flying ray, with a bit of a kite. Mantine may combine manta with marine, brine, or tine.

Did you know?

People once mistook it for a bird when it leapt out of the water.
In Alola it carries surfers and adorns postcards and posters.
Remoraid, based on a firearm, gives it the look of a fighter plane with roundels.
