Lifestyle
Guided by a magnet in its brain, it digs very fast in mountains and caves, eats boulders, and evolves into Steelix around age 100.
In the anime
Brock battles Ash with an Onix from Pewter City, then gives it to Forrest. Before a later episode, it has evolved into Steelix.
Name origin
Onix may come from onyx. Its design suggests a rock python or an earthworm, and the Japanese Iwark joins rock and snake.
