Appearance
A very long silvery-gray rock serpent, its segments chipped and scraped. Three sections bear long spikes; the huge head is mostly a wide jaw of square teeth, and the tail ends in a blunt cone.

Lifestyle
It burrows farther than Onix, toward the world's core. Heat, pressure, and iron make its body harder than diamond. Onix becomes Steelix after about a hundred years. It can Mega Evolve.
In the anime
The species debuts with Jasmine: she helps Ash stop Team Rocket from stealing Pikachu, then loses to Cyndaquil. Ash wins the Mineral Badge.
Name origin
Like Onix, it suggests a snake and earthworm, or a burrowing dragon, the bergstutz. Steelix blends steel, helix, and Onix or onyx.

- Under the jaw, the male has two pairs of ridges and the female only one.
