Its story

Appearance

Umbreon has a sleek black body, long pointed ears, crimson eyes, and a bushy tail. Yellow rings mark its forehead, ears, legs, and tail.

Lifestyle

It evolves when Eevee is exposed to moonlight. It hunts in the dark, sees with no light, and sprays poisonous sweat when angry.

In the anime

Gary's Eevee evolved into Umbreon, which is how the species first appeared.

Name origin

Umbreon may blend umbra, Latin for shadow, and eon, the shared Eevee-evolution suffix. It personifies night; designer Atsuko Nishida said it had no set motif.

Did you know?

On a full moon its rings glow, and the Moon's aura fills it with a mysterious power.
In the 1997 demo it was Poison-type, with purple markings, and evolved using a Poison Stone.
In a 2020 poll it got 67,062 votes, favorite Generation II Pokémon and favorite Eeveelution.
