Its story

Appearance

Chimchar looks like a young chimpanzee with orange fur and a light yellow face. A swirling crest sits on its head, and a flame hides a red patch on its rear.

Lifestyle

Its flame, fed in the stomach, resists rain, goes out when it sleeps, and burns weakly if it is ill. Agile, it climbs tall mountains and evolves into Monferno, then Infernape.

In the anime

Paul commands one, releases it, and Ash catches it. That Chimchar becomes a Monferno, then an Infernape.

Name origin

Takao Unno designed it after a young chimpanzee. With the flame gone, the rear markings also suggest a young baboon, and Chimchar may combine chimp and char, meaning to burn.
