Appearance
Sandshrew is bipedal, with dry, tough yellow hide patterned like bricks. Its belly and muzzle are soft white, its eyes blue and almond-shaped, and its tail thick and conical.

Its story
Lifestyle
It lives deep in burrows and comes out to seize a passing Bug Pokémon. Curled tight, it takes a blow. In Alola, icy blue, it can no longer curl and slides on its belly.
In the anime
A.J.'s Sandshrew stays loyal despite very harsh training, whip included. A giant Alolan one evolves into an Alolan Sandslash after touching an Ice Stone.
Name origin
Sandshrew joins sand and shrew. It suggests an armadillo or a pangolin more than a shrew: hard scales, claws, a curling body, and desert life. The Alolan form suggests an igloo and a curling stone.
Did you know?
