Appearance
Torkoal looks like a four-legged tortoise, with reddish-brown skin and gray-black bands. Its eyes seem shut for good. Holes in its heavy, rock-like black shell glow red.

Its story
Lifestyle
In volcanic mountains it seeks coal, packs it into its shell, and burns it for energy. If that inner fire goes out, Torkoal dies.

In a Gym battle, Flannery's Torkoal beats Ash's Pikachu and Treecko, then loses to Corphish.
Name origin
It is based on a tortoise, perhaps the red-footed tortoise, and on a charcoal kiln. Torkoal blends tortoise and coal.
