Whiscash is a Water / Ground-type Pokémon, No. 340 in the National Pokédex, introduced in Generation 3 (Hoenn region).

Description

« Strikes its caudal fin against the swamp bed to shake the ground and startle its prey. It will then swallow the fleeing prey whole. People mistook this behavior as the cause of earthquakes. »

Its story

Appearance

Whiscash is chubby, dark blue, with a yellow belly, like a catfish. Its huge mouth has light blue lips, long yellow cheek barbels, and a yellow W on its forehead.

Lifestyle

Territorial, it nests on swamp bottoms: a tail strike sets off quakes reaching over three miles, and it senses natural ones. It evolves from Barboach.

In the anime

Fisherman Sullivan has hunted a giant Whiscash, Nero, for fifty years. After battling Ash, Nero swallows even a Master Ball and swims away.

Name origin

It draws on Namazu, the Japanese mythic catfish said to cause earthquakes. Whiscash may combine whisker, mustache, and catfish.

Poor eyesight means it finds prey by the vibrations its whiskers detect.
This glutton sometimes swallows prey whole, eats mud, and gulps objects too.
Several Whiscash were planned for an episode cancelled after an earthquake in Japan.
